Gutward is an organisational and self-observation tool, not medical advice. Always discuss dietary, medication and treatment decisions with a qualified healthcare professional.

What Gutward is

Gutward is an organisational and self-observation tool. It helps you keep track of a dietary protocol you have chosen, your own food status, meals, symptoms, bowel patterns and guided food reintroductions, in one place, and — where you choose to connect with a professional or accept a clinic invitation — gives that professional, or the practitioners assigned to your clinic care team, a clearer, consented view of what you've recorded between appointments.

Barcode scanning

Scanner results are protocol-relative guidance, not a safety or allergen-free determination. A result tells you how a product's listed ingredients compare against your own selected protocol and exclusions — and it separates what the data actually supports: an ingredient can be flagged, need caution, be unknown to Gutward, or the product may simply not be found at all. Product databases can be incomplete or out of date, so the manufacturer's current packaging is always the authoritative source for ingredient and allergen information. Gutward never determines that a food is safe, or free of any allergen, for you.

What Gutward is not

Gutward does not diagnose allergies, intolerances, sensitivities, triggers or disease. It does not identify causation from symptom correlations. It does not cure, treat, heal, prevent or reverse Crohn's disease, IBD or autoimmune disease. It does not prescribe diets, medication or treatment, does not determine whether a food is medically safe for you, and does not replace your doctor, IBD team, allergy service or registered dietitian — including where a professional is connected to your account.

AIP is not for everyone

The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) is Gutward's first supported structured protocol, but it is not appropriate for every person or every circumstance. Whether AIP, or any elimination and reintroduction approach, is suitable for you is a decision for you and an appropriately qualified professional, not something Gutward determines on your behalf.

Food allergies

Gutward's food-trial tools are not for diagnosing or testing a known or suspected food allergy. If you have a known or suspected allergy, seek appropriate medical advice and do not attempt a reintroduction challenge through the app unless directed by a qualified professional.

Crohn's disease specifically

Food suitability can change with active disease, strictures, surgery, obstruction risk, individual fibre and texture tolerance, medication and other individual circumstances. No general food list or protocol, including AIP, is suitable for every person with Crohn's disease at every point in their condition.

If you are unwell now

If you are experiencing an active flare, obstruction symptoms, severe pain, or any other urgent health concern, contact your IBD team, GP or emergency services as appropriate — do not rely on Gutward, including messaging a connected professional through the app. Gutward does not monitor accounts for emergencies and cannot guarantee a message will be seen within any particular timeframe.
