Why Gutward exists.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2019 after being admitted to hospital with severe pain and a bowel blockage. The illness, the treatment side effects and the fatigue that came with it eventually ended my military career — a path I'd expected to follow for a lot longer.

I rebuilt from there through property and project work, and for the years that followed I managed Crohn's the way a lot of people do: alongside everything else, in the background, held together with whatever notes app or spreadsheet was closest to hand. It never became a tidy story. Flares didn't arrive on a schedule, and neither did the effort of keeping track of what I could eat, what I'd tried, and what had actually happened when I tried it.

In 2026 another serious blockage led to hospital, a six-week liquid diet, and the slow, deliberate process of returning to food afterwards. That's when the scattered-notes problem became impossible to ignore: I was managing books, food lists, symptoms, meals and reintroductions across too many places at once, at exactly the point I had the least energy to do it. Gutward grew out of a simple question — could this be made clearer, more practical and less exhausting?

My experience taught me why this problem matters, and how it actually feels day to day. It does not make me a clinician, and Gutward is being built with that boundary firmly in place. My other background is in building and running structured processes: military fleet processes and standard operating procedures, and later property, compliance and workflow management platforms. That's the skill Gutward draws on — taking something with a lot of moving parts and giving it a clear, dependable structure — not medical expertise.

The product principle that follows from that is deliberately modest: make a difficult process clearer, not claim to make medicine simple. Gutward organises information and supports self-observation; it doesn't diagnose, prescribe or promise an outcome. As the product develops, it will go through clinical, dietetic, privacy and food-safety review before any claim beyond that is made.
